Keep Your Lawn Lush in the Summer Heat
As temperatures climb, it takes extra effort to keep your lawn healthy and vibrant through the dog days of summer. The intense heat, sunlight, and potential drought conditions can take a toll on grass. Don't surrender your lawn to brown, dried-out patches and weeds! You can maintain a lush, green lawn all season long with proper care.
The key to deeper root growth is to water deeply and infrequently, giving your lawn access to moisture-locked underground. Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between watering for the healthiest grass. Install an in-ground sprinkler system on a timer to ensure your lawn gets adequate hydration.
Aerate and Dethatch
Aerating reduces soil compaction and allows nutrients and water to penetrate the roots better. Dethatching also helps heat tolerance by removing dead material insulating the grass blades.
Never scalp your lawn by mowing it too short! Keeping grass between 3-4 inches tall encourages deeper roots. Longer blades also shade the soil, reducing water loss. Sharpen mower blades regularly for clean cuts that don't stress the grass. Avoid mowing during the hottest part of the day.
Summer weeds like crabgrass and nutsedge thrive in the heat. Stay vigilant by maintaining healthy turf is the best defense, as thick grass chokes out weeds. Overseed bare spots to prevent invaders from moving in.
With some TLC, your lawn can survive and even flourish despite summer's heat and sun.
