Aeration
Lawn aeration is putting small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots. This promotes deep root growth which results in a stronger lawn. Lawn aeration or core aeration is performed in spring or fall and is used to control lawn thatch, the organic layer of debris made of dead and living plant material (leaves, stems, etc.), that lays between the top of the soil and the actively growing grass.
To aerate the lawn, there are two types of aeration tools: a spike aerator and a plug aerator. The spike aerator pokes holes in the ground using a tine or fork. The plug aerator removes a plug or core of grass and soil from the lawn. To achieve the best results, use a plug aerator to remove plugs of soil, this is more effective than a spike aerator, which can cause more compaction around the holes.
Lawn aeration is best performed when the grass is in peak growing season, like in the early spring and early fall. When the grass is actively growing, lawn aeration helps helps loosen compacted areas of the lawn, permitting air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots. Lawn aeration helps to improve the drainage in the yard. Aerating the lawn promotes grass roots to growing deeper and stronger, resulting in a fuller, more vibrant lawn.
Lawn aeration is often overlooked by homeowners due to the time it takes to aerate the lawn. Call the pros at Floyd's Lawn & Landscape and let us help free some time from your busy schedule.
